#wayOn Friday, October 3rd, Wayne County CEO students had the opportunity to learn about the value of community engagement from two guest speakers: Libby Lingafelter of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce/City of Fairfield and Kristi Hornung, owner and operator of Carnaby Square in Fairfield. Both shared the importance of building community relationships as small business owners.
They emphasized that small businesses are the lifeblood of downtown districts across the nation. Many small business owners not only run their shops but also serve in civic clubs, nonprofits, and community organizations that provide vital services and social opportunities. Libby and Kristi highlighted many examples of programs offered in Fairfield and throughout Wayne County that thrive because of the involvement of local business owners and community leaders.
Kristi expressed her passion for serving her community, noting that her love for Fairfield drives her to get involved. She explained that when the community thrives, businesses benefit as well. Events like Fall Fun Fest, parades, and other local activities bring more people downtown, increasing foot traffic for businesses. She shared how much she enjoys seeing people walking along Main Street, grabbing coffee or a doughnut, and supporting local shops.
Libby spoke about the role of the Chamber in bringing people from outside communities to Fairfield through various events and programs. However, she noted that these efforts require the support of volunteers beyond her staff. She relies on student volunteers, the retail merchants committee, the recreation committee, and many other community members who give their time and energy. Like Kristi, Libby shared her genuine love for her work and her community.
A big thank you to Kristi and Libby for sharing their insights and for all they do to support and strengthen our community! #waynecountychamber #carnaby
