Wayne County CEO students recently had the opportunity to visit Growls & Meows Veterinary Clinic, where they met with Mary and Mark Murphy, along with their daughter, Dr. Tamara Murphy. The Murphy family’s passion for animals always makes this a favorite stop for CEO students.

During the visit, students explored every part of the facility—from the reception area to the procedure and surgical rooms, as well as the boarding and grooming areas. They even got to meet some of the clinic’s exotic animals, including parrots and turtles.

Mark and Mary shared the story of how their business began, recalling how they spent many of their early date nights visiting pet stores while Mark was in the service. After returning home, Mark purchased a pet store in Flora, and over the years, their business has grown and evolved into what it is today.

The Murphys also spoke with students about the importance of managing expenses and understanding costs to maintain a financially sustainable business. One example they shared was their use of locally sourced honey for wound care. By preparing their own honey-based bandages instead of purchasing pre-made ones, they reduce costs while also supporting local producers—benefiting both their business and their community.
