This past Thursday, April 30th, Wayne County CEO students had the opportunity to get an in-depth look at Lewis Scrap Yard in Burnt Prairie, Illinois. Rob Edwards, Operations Manager, led students on a tour of the facility, explaining each area and the work that takes place throughout the yard. He also shared the history behind the business, offering valuable insight into its growth over the years.

Lewis Scrap Yard is a third-generation operation, now owned by brothers Tim and Billy Lewis. They learned the trade from their grandfather, who moved the family from California to Burnt Prairie and laid the foundation for the business. Over time, the company has evolved from a small, family-run scrap operation into a large-scale industrial scrap yard. Notably, they were among the first in the industry to scrap locomotives.

The business has continued to expand, now including feeder sites in Eldorado, Mt. Vernon, and Sparta, along with a recycling operation and a trucking company. Their story is a true example of entrepreneurship in action.

Thank you to Lewis Scrap Yard for hosting Wayne County CEO students and providing such an informative look into the world of scrap and recycling!
