Wayne County CEO students wrapped up their program year last week with a class trip to Casey to experience the famous “Big Things in a Small Town.” Students had the opportunity to hear from Tom Daughhetee, who shared the story of how Casey transformed itself into a nationally recognized tourist destination that now draws an estimated 50,000–100,000 visitors annually.

Tom explained that Casey’s economy experienced a downturn in the early 2000s after the loss of several large manufacturing employers. Around that same time, the wife and daughter of local businessman Jim Bolin wanted to open a coffee shop on Main Street. While sitting on his front porch listening to the wind chimes, Mr. Bolin began thinking about how the community could attract visitors and support small businesses. Curious about the size of the world’s largest wind chimes, he began researching the idea and ultimately decided, “Yes, this is doable — I can build the world’s largest wind chime.”

Using recycled and unused materials from his local business, Mr. Bolin created the massive wind chime that would become the first of many oversized attractions in Casey. Over time, he continued adding new “Big Things” throughout the community, helping establish Casey as the “Big Things in a Small Town” destination. What began as one creative idea sparked tourism, strengthened economic development, and brought renewed energy and opportunity to the community.

This was a great day... students had a lot of fun and learned about the history of Casey, and a great way to finish up a great year!
